Decca releases Giant Box set with all Wagner operas

Decca will be releasing a Giant Box set with all Wagner operas recorded at the Bayreuth Festival at an unbelievable bargain price on 17 June (33 CDs - $62.99). The box include all the operas that are being played at the Bayreuth Festival, that is:

Die Walküre
Siegfried
Götterdämmerung
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg
Tristan und Isolde
Parsifal
Der fliegende Holländer
Tannhäuser
Lohengrin

Most of these recording will be second or fifth choice for Wagnerians collecting recordings. I get a kinda "let's take what we have"-feeling watching the production list. What do you think?

I think the same as you. None of these versions are within my top three for any of the operas. However, the set as a whole, does come pretty cheap, and though not my personal top choices, the recordings are generally of a high standard - the Böhm Ring and Tristan, for example, may make top of the list for quite a few people, though. Also the Parsifal is of high quality, imo, though I personally would have preferred them to release the old Knappertsbusch recording..

I accepet what you say but as introduction to Wagner I suppose it's hard to do better with such equilibrium. Even if not the greatest records it's all there with a great price and with several great conductores.Someone who is beggining a classical colection may had here a very big thing. It's all there, and after it's possible try other records.
