Tannhäuser Returns to London

Tannhäuser, "Wagner's great battle of the sensual and the spiritual" returns to The Royal Opera in London just before Christmas. A new production by Tim Albery puts Tannhäuser back in the repertory after an absence of more than twenty years. Semyon Bychkov, who may be one of the finest Wagner conductors today, will return after stunning performances of Lohengrin last year. Johan Botha – one of the most acclaimed Wagner voices in the world today – sings the lead role.

Michaela Schuster, who did a wonderful Ortrud in Stefan Herheim's "marionette" Lohengrin in Berlin, will sing Venus and Eva-Maria Westbroek, who many will know as Sieglinde in Die Walküre from Bayreuth, will sing Elisabeth. According to ROH, the production combines striking imagery of the two worlds set apart, from the indulgence and abandon of the Venusberg to the privation and sincerity of the Wartburg. What exactly this means, we will have to wait and see, but obviously the visual aspect of the production is important.

Hi! So when are you coming to hear it in London? I've got tickets for Dec. 19, at 15:00, perhaps you'll join us! BTW, did Eva-Maria Westbroek replace Edith Haller as Sieglinde in Bayreuth 2010 second and third Ring? Because we heard Edith Haller in the first Ring. She was fantastic!

In case you experience Bayreuth withdrawal symptoms and cannot wait until July 2011, here is something to while away:

Check the ones from 2009; there is a very interesting interview of Thieleman and Weigele from the "Orchestra Graben"! It's a real "pit"!

Hi! I am working on a London-trip, but it's in the blue...
No, Eva-Maria did not sing at Bayreuth this summer. Frau Haller sang all three Sieglindes.
BTW: I was fortunate to visit the pit in August. It is truly a mysterious place! :)
